The bad news is that Mercedes passenger car sales continued to decline in 2025, but on the other hand, sales of Mercedes-AMG and the G-Class increased. Sales of electric models are also on a downward trend, while plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model sales increased by 9%.
2025 was a turbulent year worldwide. The instability created by the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration and the decline of the premium market in China affected Mercedes sales globally.
As a result, Mercedes sold 1,800,800 passenger cars in 2025, representing a 9% decrease, steeper than the 3% decline in 2024. The 9% drop is equivalent to a significant volume of 182,600 units.
Sales of electric vehicles also continued to decline, falling by 9% in 2025. Mercedes sold 168,800 electric models in 2025, representing less than 10% of total sales, more precisely 9.37%.
By contrast, thanks to the fact that sales of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles increased by 9% in 2025, total sales of plug-in and electric vehicles (xEV) remained at the same level as in 2024, namely 368,600 units.
However, these represent only 20.4% of total global sales, far from the 50% target Mercedes set for itself in the autumn of 2020. Still, in Europe, the percentage is much better, at 40%, not far from the ambitious goal set in 2020.
Things are expected to improve significantly with the launch of the new electric Mercedes CLA, named 2 days ago as Car of the Year 2026 in Europe, which has been very well received by customers. Mercedes does not provide sales figures but says that in Germany, where orders began in April 2025, customers have to wait until the beginning of 2026.
In addition, the new Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake EQ and GLB EQ will follow on the same platform.
Sales by segment
Sales in the Top-End segment fell by 5% to 268,000 units, a smaller decline than the 14% drop recorded in 2024. The explanation is that Mercedes-AMG and the G-Class recorded record sales that compensated for the decline in S-Class sales.
Thus, Mercedes-AMG achieved one of the best results in its history, with 145,000 units sold (+7%). G-Class sales also surged, reaching 49,700 units, an increase of 23%. Although the Mercedes G-Class Electric is not a success in the USA, it contributed to the overall success through sales in other markets.
The share of Mercedes-Maybach versions within Mercedes S-Class sales also increased. Globally, one out of three Mercedes S-Class vehicles sold is a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, while in China one out of two S-Class is a Maybach.
Here too, however, a recovery is expected, as the world premiere of the S-Class facelift will take place on January 29, 2026, followed by a facelift for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the GLS.
Sales of the Core division also fell by 10% to 1,049,600 units, but here as well a rebound is expected with the launch of the Mercedes C-Class facelift in spring 2026, as well as the new electric models Mercedes GLC EQ, available from April in Europe and in the second half of the year in the USA, and the Mercedes C-Class EQ, which will debut in autumn 2026.
Sales of the Entry range also declined by 10% to 483,300 units, but expectations here are also optimistic. In January 2026, the new Mercedes CLA mild hybrid will be available, followed by the CLA Shooting Brake and GLB. In addition, the decision to continue production of the A-Class, which will move from Germany to Hungary, will have a favorable impact on sales.
Sales by region
Thanks to the good result in Germany, where sales remained at the same level as in 2024 at 213,200 units, sales in Europe fell by only 1%, to 634,600 units.
By contrast, the decline is dramatic in Asia and North America. In Asia, sales fell by 16% due to the massive 19% drop in China, while in North America sales fell by 12% because of the 12% decline in the U.S. market.
In the rest of the world, sales increased by 17% to 98,700 units.
Van sales
Van sales fell by 11% to 359,100 units, but sales of electric vans increased by 46% to 28,500 units. Certainly, the new Mercedes VLE, launching in spring, will boost electric van sales.
