Mercedes-AMG is presenting, in Detroit, the top model GLE 63 AMG Coupe. The beast delivers up to 585 HP from the 5.5 liter V8 turbo AMG engine.

Despite some rumours that all the new AMG models will get the new 4-liter V8 bi-turbo, the top model GLE 63 AMG Coupe will retain the well known 5.5-liter V8 bi-turbo up to 585 HP. This is a very quick Mercedes answer to the recent BMW X6 M.

As in case of the E 63 AMG, the GLE 63 AMG will be available in two versions: 557 HP and 700 Nm for the ”base” version and 585 HP and 760 Nm for the S version, which means 10 HP and 10 Nm more than in the BMW X6 M.

Mercedes promises a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds for the base version and 4.2 seconds for the top version, meanwhile top speed is limited to 250 km/h in both cases.

The V8 engine is mated with the well known 7-speed automatic gearbox with paddles on the steering wheel. The official NEDC fuel consumption is 11.9 l/100 km, corresponding to a CO2 emission level of 279 g/km.

The permanent 4 wheel drive system (4Matic) has a different torque distribution compared with the normal GLE. If in case of the GLE Coupe, the torque distribution is 50/50%, the AMG version provides a more sporty distribution of torque with 40/60% front to rear. The Active Curve System (ACS) will improve the handling and agility in quick corners by minimizing the  body roll. As in case of the normal GLE Coupe, the GLE 63 AMG Coupe will benefit from the Airmatic adaptive suspension with five programs:  Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport and Sport+.

The cockpit is costumized by the flat steering wheel at the bottom, the carbon insertions and the AMG sport seats.

The expected price is 120,000 euros for the S version and 115,000 euros for the base version. By comparison, the GLE 450 AMG will cost around 75,000 euros, leaving enough space between the new AMG sport line and the top of the line AMG models. All models will start in July 2015.
