Possible Mercedes S-Class Coupe design registered by Swiss firm

Swiss firm Robu Aktiengesellschaft has registered the design of two Mercedes S-Class Coupes with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

When Olla Kallenius took the helm at Mercedes, he immediately set about streamlining the range and decided Mercedes had too many coupes. So the C-Class Coupe and E-Class Coupe were replaced by a single model called the CLE, and the CLS and S-Class Coupe disappeared without a successor.

Surprisingly, however, the Mercedes S-Class Coupe is making a comeback thanks to a Swiss company, Robu Aktiengesellschaft, which has registered the design of two Mercedes S-Class Coupe models, one under AMG brand and the other under Maybach brand, with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

Curiously, the design has been patented by a firm that is supposedly unrelated to Mercedes. On the other hand, it’s odd that a firm that has no connection with Mercedes would register a design derived from the Mercedes S-Class.

Mercedes ditched the S-Class Coupe due to low sales and to channel its development funds into the new EQS/EQS SUV luxury electric range. But the careers of these two models are on a downward slope despite Mercedes trying to boost sales by offering many expensive option packages for free.

In the new era of SUVs and coupe SUVs, the chances of a traditional coupe are low. That’s why a possible Mercedes S-Class Coupe would only make sense in the new Mythos range of very expensive limited-edition models, which debuted with the new AMG Pure Speed.

The design registered by the Swiss firm shows two models: an AMG and a Maybach with a split window.

The Swiss firm’s patented design proves that there will be a new S-Class Coupe built by Mercedes or a third party. A future S-Class Coupe based on the current S-Class W223 S-Class and produced in a limited series could be prohibitively expensive.

The current Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance limousine with the new V8-powered PHEV system costs 210,029 euros in Europe ($187,350 in the US), and the Maybach S 680, the only Mercedes with a V12 under the hood, starts at 238,488 euros in Europe ($241,650 in the US).

Since coupes are always more expensive, expect the S-Class Coupe to be even more expensive.
