The Mercedes G 500 has disappeared from the Mercedes configurator, with only the G 450 d and AMG G 63 currently available. The reason appears to be the introduction of the new M 256 Evo engine.

Launched in March 2024, the Mercedes G-Class W465 was offered with three engine variants: the G 450 d featuring a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel producing 367 PS, the G 500 powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine with 449 PS, and the AMG G 63 equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 delivering 585 PS. All versions feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with a 23 PS electric motor.

Following the introduction of the W465 generation in March 2024, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 remained the only G-Class model with a V8 engine, as the G 500 W465 abandoned the 4.0-liter V8 with 422 PS used in the W463. It was replaced by the new M 256 inline-six engine.

Now, the Mercedes G 500 has disappeared from the configurator, and according to mbpassion.de, the reason is that Mercedes is preparing to install the updated M 256 Evo inline-six engine in the G 500.

The new M 256 Evo engine is similar to the unit recently introduced in the facelifted S-Class. It features a more powerful electric-assisted compressor (in addition to the turbocharger, the engine uses a small mechanical compressor that provides boost pressure until the turbocharger reaches operating speed), a cylinder head with optimized intake and exhaust ports, and a revised intake camshaft.

As a result, the M 256 Evo will continue to produce 449 PS, but torque increases from 560 Nm to 600 Nm and can reach up to 640 Nm with the overboost function. It is also equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology featuring an electric motor delivering 23 PS and 205 Nm.

It is also rumored that the AMG G 63 will receive the new flat-plane-crank V8 engine in the spring of 2027, although Mercedes has not officially confirmed this. According to sales statistics, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 was the best-selling G-Class variant in 2025, accounting for more than half of the G-Class’s total sales volume of 49,700 units.

According to mbpassion.de, the waiting time for the AMG G 63 is currently around six months, with orders placed today expected to be delivered in November 2026. Buyers of the diesel version also face waiting times until September, and the diesel model is reportedly set to receive a new electrically heated catalytic converter.

Currently, the Mercedes G 450 d starts at €127,591.80, while the Mercedes-AMG G 63 starts at €193,327.40.
