Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the new Smart #2 is already available to order, with prices starting at €19,990. It is offered in four trim levels, all featuring the same 35.8 kWh LFP battery and 60 kW (82 PS) electric motor.

It has been 28 years since the launch of the original Smart City-Coupé, which later became known as the Smart Fortwo. In 2019, the brand underwent a major transformation, becoming an all-electric marque jointly owned on a 50:50 basis by Mercedes-Benz and Geely.

The new era began with a range of SUVs: the small Smart #1, followed by the Smart #3 and Smart #5, positioned at the lower and upper ends of the compact SUV segment, respectively. However, Smart reserved the #2 designation for the successor to the Fortwo, underlining the fact that this is a two-seater.

The successor to the Smart Fortwo arrives seven years after Mercedes-Benz and Geely established their new partnership, at a time when small electric cars are becoming increasingly popular. Examples include the Dacia Spring and Renault Twingo, which are built on the same platform, as well as the concept previewing the future Citroën 2CV, which is expected to enter series production, and the upcoming VW ID.1, the successor to the e-Up, due to debut in 2027.

Mercedes-Benz and Geely have moved quickly, however, and following its world premiere in Paris, the Smart #2 is already available to order. Four trim levels are offered: Pure, Pure+, Premium and Couture. There is no option to select individual extras, as each trim level represents a predefined equipment package. Therefore, if you want a particular feature, you must choose the trim level that includes it.

Prices start at €19,990 for the Pure, while the Pure+ costs €20,990. The Premium is priced at €24,490, and the Couture, a limited edition restricted to just 999 units, costs €25,690.

The good news is that all trim levels come with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot assist, automatic high-beam assist, a reversing camera and traffic sign recognition.

All four versions feature a 35.8 kWh LFP battery powering a rear-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor developing 60 kW (82 PS). The battery supports DC charging at up to 65 kW, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80% in less than 20 minutes. The entry-level Pure supports AC charging at just 7.4 kW, while the other versions can charge at up to 11 kW from AC stations. The WLTP range is 290 km, almost double the 160 km offered by the previous version. The Smart #2 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.6 seconds and has a top speed of 140 km/h.

For these reasons, the Pure+ appears to be the most attractive option, particularly as it also includes a heated driver’s seat. The Premium offers additional equipment, including 16-inch alloy wheels, ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof, seats upholstered in a combination of textile and leather, and heated steering wheel and front passenger seat.

Once the trim level has been selected, the only remaining options are the exterior colour and various accessories. The Pure is available only in white, black and silver. The Premium offers a wider colour palette, including red, blue, yellow, green and beige.

The Smart #2’s tailgate is particularly practical. The rear window can be opened separately from the tailgate, as on BMW models, while the tailgate itself is split into two sections, as on Range Rover models. The lower section can support a load of up to 120 kg.
