Mercedes has unveiled the first official photos of the upcoming Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet with its soft top folded down on its official Facebook page, while Mercedes-AMG has released a video demonstrating the electrically operated fabric roof.
After publishing the first official images of the future Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet with the soft top raised in December 2025, the German manufacturer has now revealed the first photos showing the roof fully retracted. Mercedes-AMG has also released a video showcasing the operation of the electrically powered soft top.
It is already clear that the new Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet will be a more practical and more luxurious vehicle than its predecessors from the W460 and W463 generations.
The first-generation W460 featured a manually operated soft top, while the second-generation W463 received an electrically operated roof controlled by a button on the center console. The electro-hydraulic system, consisting of a pump and a series of hydraulic cylinders, folded the fabric roof behind the rear seats in just a few seconds. Unlike conventional convertibles, the W463 G-Class retained its B- and C-pillars to preserve the body’s torsional rigidity.
However, both the W460 and W463 generations were available exclusively as two-door models. The new G-Class Cabriolet will be the first production version with four doors—excluding the ultra-limited Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, of which only 99 examples were built in 2017 at a price of €749,700.
Mercedes has been without a G-Class Cabriolet for more than 12 years. Production of the W463 G-Class Cabriolet ended in 2014 with the special “Final Edition 200”, offered exclusively as the G 500 and powered by the 5.5-liter V8 producing 387 PS and 530 Nm.
The new-generation Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet will feature a four-door body and an electrically operated soft top. As the first official images reveal, the B- and C-pillars will be retained, just as on the previous generation, to maintain the structural rigidity required for serious off-road driving.
Mercedes has not announced any engine lineup yet. However, since Mercedes-AMG chose to demonstrate the soft-top mechanism and the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is the best-selling version of the G-Class range, the flagship twin-turbo V8 is virtually certain to be available in the Cabriolet as well. It is expected to be followed by the G 500 with its inline six-cylinder engine. It remains to be seen whether a diesel version will also be offered.
The Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet has already completed off-road testing in Austria as well as winter testing in Sweden, and is expected to make its official debut this autumn.
