The production of the brand-new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé has started at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. The SUV Coupe is the second new model of the year that found room in the plant’s portofolio and already the tenth model for the site.

With the launch of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé, the German premium brand is taking advantage of the ever-growing popularity of the SUV segment.  “With the start of production of the GLC Coupé, we are further expanding our SUV family as a key element in the Mercedes-Benz growth strategy,” says Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars, Production and Supply Chain Management.

The manufacturing site in Bremen is the main production site for the model series. The team transfers the popularity and the strength of the already established GLC Coupé into the niche of the compact SUVs, adding a dynamic expressive design, fitting it standardly with a sports suspension and offering the possibility of an air suspension, also integrating the 4Matic all-wheel drive together with the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission.

Flexible and efficient, the assembly line in Bremen builds the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé on the same line as the C-Class sedan, the C-Class Estate and the standard GLC.

“The launch of the GLC Coupé delivers the latest proof of the versatile, competitive and efficient way in which we produce in Bremen,” says Peter Theurer, Head of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. “Within just a few weeks, we have successfully integrated the launch of two brand-new models into ongoing series production at the plant, something that is only possible with a highly motivated and expertly qualified team.”

The individual components of the GLC Coupé structure are manufactured in the plant’s own press shop, which is one of the most advanced in the world. The body is produced on the same line as the GLC, conserving resources and saving costs. After the production of the defunct GLK has come to a halt, new equipment was brought and the already existing one was highly modernized.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen is the biggest employer in the region with more than 12,500 employees. Ten different models are being assembled here at the moment: the Saloon, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet of the C-Class, the Coupé and Cabriolet of the E-Class, the SUVs GLC and GLC Coupé as well as the two Roadsters SLC and SL. In 2015, the plant was rewarded as “Factory of the Year” in the large-scale production category.
