Unlike the AMG C 63, Mercedes has equipped the new CLE coupe in the base AMG version with the 3-litre inline 6-cylinder engine developing 449 PS. All the details about the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic.
After criticism over the decision to fit a 4-cylinder engine as part of the P3 hybrid system in the new AMG C 63 S E Performance, Mercedes has decided to install a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine in the first AMG version of the new Mercedes CLE coupe. The engine is M256 M, turbocharged, with an electric compressor to reduce the turbo lag to the minimum until the turbo come to life and a 48V mild hybrid system with an integrated starter generator that develops 17 kW (23 PS) and a maximum torque of 205 Nm. The engine develops 449 PS and a maximum torque of 560 Nm (600 Nm with overboost for 12 seconds), transmitted to all four wheels via fully variable all-wheel drive and the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G 9-speed automatic transmission.
The Mercedes AMG CLE 53 4Matic is distinguished by the progressively forward-sloping front section (“Shark Nose”), in combination with the precisely shaped bonnet, the AMG-specific A-shaped radiator grille, and the flat, sharply cut full-LED headlights plus the strikingly designed front apron raised in the middle section in an A-shape to create a large air inlet for high airflow and the outer air inlets with two cross slats. The rear is characterized by the two-part taillights with three-dimensional LED lights, joined by a dark red element, the round double tailpipe and a spoiler lip on the trunk painted in car color (optional black in the AMG Styling package).
The optional AMG Optics package sets even sportier accents. It includes additional flics on the front and rear aprons, a more pronounced spoiler lip on the trunk lid, and a diffuser board between the tailpipe trims. For further individualization, two AMG Night packages and AMG Carbon packages are available.
Compared to the Mercedes CLE, the AMG version has flared front and rear fenders, a wide track (plus 58 millimeters at the front, plus 75 millimeters at the rear), and 19-inch wheels as standard (20-inch optional).
C-Class inspired interior
The interior is similar to that of the C-Class, with a 12.3-inch display for the digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch driver-facing portrait display. The Mercedes AMG CLE 53 4Matic Coupe comes standard with integral sports seats upholstered in Artico leather/Microcut black microfiber with special AMG graphics and red contrasting topstitching. AMG Performance seats with even more pronounced side bolsters and Nappa leather upholstery are optional. A flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel in a double-spoke design is standard.
The driver can select several layouts for the digital instrument cluster: Classic, Sport, and AMG Supersport with a central round tachometer and perspectively designed horizontal displays, that are located to the left and right of the tachometer and create a spatial impression of depth.
As with other AMG models, the driver can select “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual” driving modes and switch to Manual gearbox mode, in which case gears are changed exclusively from the paddles behind the steering wheel.
Integral steering and adaptive steel suspension
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic comes with adaptive Adaptive Ride Control suspension with steel springs, which can be adjusted in Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes, as can the steering. Integral steering with a 2.5-degree steering angle is also standard. The rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels by up to 2.5 degrees up to 100 kph, and in the same direction by up to 0.7 degrees from 100 kph.
Customers can choose the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, which includes the Race program with Drift mode and red-painted brake calipers with AMG lettering on the front and rear axle.
