The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe targets customers of the top Porsche Taycan versions. The first comparison between the two high-performance models.

The rivalry from the internal combustion era between the Porsche Panamera and the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe now moves into the electric realm, as the new-generation Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is available exclusively as an EV.

As such, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe competes against the top Porsche Taycan variants: Turbo, Turbo S, Turbo GT, and Turbo GT with Weissach Package.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is the first standalone electric model developed entirely by AMG, with no equivalent in the regular Mercedes lineup, and it is based on the new AMG.EA platform, which will also be used for the development of an SUV. It is available in AMG GT 55 4-Door Coupe 4Matic+ form with 816 PS and AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe 4Matic+ form with 1,169 PS, both featuring three motors — two on the rear axle and one on the front axle.

On the other side, the top Porsche Taycan versions each feature two motors: Turbo (884 PS), Turbo S (952 PS), Turbo GT, and Turbo GT with Weissach Package (1,034 PS).

In this comparison, we focus on the flagship Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe 4Matic+ with 1,169 PS and the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package with 1,034 PS.

Although high-performance electric models have not enjoyed strong sales success so far, Mercedes-AMG hopes the situation will be different with the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe thanks to the technology integrated into this model: Yasa axial-flux motors, a Formula 1-derived battery, and a record charging capacity of up to 600 kW.

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT

Dimensions and interior space

At 5,094 mm long, 1,959 mm wide, and 1,411 mm tall, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is larger than the Taycan Turbo GT, which measures 4,968 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and 1,378 mm in height. Thus, the Taycan Turbo GT is 126 mm shorter than the AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe, while its 2,900 mm wheelbase is 140 mm shorter.

It is worth noting that although the AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe is 40 mm lower than the previous generation, the Taycan Turbo GT is another 33 mm lower still.

The wheelbase difference is also reflected inside, with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe offering more rear knee room as well as a larger trunk, with 415 liters compared to just 326 liters in the Porsche. However, the Porsche has a larger frunk, at 84 liters versus 62 liters in the AMG GT 4-Door.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe comes standard with a four-seat layout featuring two individual rear seats, while an optional rear bench seat is also available. Meanwhile, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package has only two seats, while the other versions offer four seats.

From a design standpoint, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door impresses with its illuminated concave grille featuring vertical slats that recall the Panamericana grille, a nod to the racing versions of the 300 SL from the 1950s. The headlights, whose daytime running lights mimic the Mercedes logo, are connected by a light bar.

At the rear, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe features a retractable rear spoiler, an active diffuser, and two underbody aerodynamic elements — one at the front and one centrally mounted — which activate at high speeds to generate a Venturi effect that presses the car onto the road. In addition, the air suspension lowers the car at high speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag.

Surprisingly, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has a more understated appearance, even with the Weissach Package. It comes with a fixed carbon-fiber rear wing, while the rear seats and other comfort features have been removed to reduce weight, making it 70 kg lighter than the Turbo GT without the Weissach Package.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe features a futuristic interior dominated by a high-tech atmosphere, enhanced by exposed carbon fiber, fine leather, microfiber, and red accents that evoke its sporty character. The multimedia display is housed under the same glass panel as the instrument cluster, but it is angled toward the driver.

The driving position is very low, and the optional AMG Performance seats offer even more aggressive bolstering. The flat-bottom AMG Performance steering wheel is wrapped either in leather or in a superb combination of carbon fiber on the upper and lower sections with microfiber on the sides, and it features paddles for adjusting the energy recuperation levels.

With the Weissach package, Porsche offers a race-inspired interior with more exposed carbon fiber, bucket seats, and no rear bench. Without the Weissach package, the Taycan Turbo GT remains a comfortable four-seat coupe.

Powertrains

There are many differences between the powertrains of the two models. The Mercedes-AMG GT uses axial-flux motors from British manufacturer YASA, fully acquired by Mercedes in 2021. These motors are far more compact and have a higher energy density than conventional electric motors. The rear motors are only 8 cm wide, while the front motor measures just 9 cm. Despite their compact dimensions, each motor can produce up to 474 PS.

The AMG GT 63 4-door uses three motors — two at the rear and one at the front — delivering a combined 1,169 PS and 2,000 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 2.4 seconds and from 0 to 200 kph in 6.8 seconds. AMG promises that, unlike other high-performance electric models, full power is available not just briefly but repeatedly and continuously thanks to the YASA motors and an F1-derived battery technology.

By comparison, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package is less powerful, producing 1,034 PS and 1,240 Nm. However, when Launch Control with overboost is activated, 1,108 PS are available for 2 seconds. In Attack Mode, it develops 952 PS for 10 seconds.

However, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door’s power advantage is not reflected in real-world performance, because the Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package reaches 100 kph in 2.2 seconds and 200 kph in 6.4 seconds. One explanation could be its lower weight: 2,295 kg compared to 2,460 kg for the AMG GT 63 4-door. As a result, the Taycan Turbo GT is 0.2 seconds quicker.

Now it remains to be seen what will happen on the racetrack, where the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT currently holds three records: 6:55.53 minutes at the Nürburgring, 1:27.87 minutes at Laguna Seca, and 2:11.28 minutes at the Shanghai International Circuit. Will the AMG GT 4-door manage to beat them?

Mercedes wanted to give customers of the new electric GT the auditory experience of a V8 engine, and in AMGFORCE S+ mode it reproduces not only V8 engine sounds, but also gear changes, interruptions in power delivery, and even virtual shifts via the steering wheel paddles.

By contrast, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT sounds like a genuine electric car, which makes the Porsche feel more natural. Porsche focused more on the driving experience and the fantastic response of the motors rather than on creating an artificial sound experience. Those who still want to hear a V8 can continue to buy the Panamera, while Mercedes no longer offers a combustion-engine version.

Chassis and Suspension

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door features a sophisticated AMG Active Ride Control suspension with semi-active roll stabilization and three-stage adjustable air springs. It uses dampers equipped with semi-active interconnected hydraulic elements that replace conventional anti-roll bars. This is a system also used by McLaren, eliminating both locking differentials and anti-roll bars, reducing both suspension weight and body roll.

The chassis uses a multilink configuration both at the front and rear, while the rear-wheel steering system allows the rear wheels to turn by up to 6 degrees relative to the front wheels.

The two rear motors provide a Torque Vectoring function that contributes to exceptional driving dynamics and grip. The AMG GT also impresses with its Race Engineer control unit featuring three rotary switches on the center tunnel: Response Control, Agility Control, and Traction Control.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has a similar suspension setup, also without anti-roll bars. The Porsche Active Ride suspension uses motor-pump units to instantly build hydraulic pressure in individual dampers, keeping the car perfectly level. It is combined with rear-wheel steering, a low center of gravity, and semi-slick Pirelli Trofeo RS tires that deliver extraordinary grip.

When the Porsche Taycan was launched in 2019, its 800V platform technology offered a charging power of 320 kW, which was a record at the time, allowing the 105 kWh gross battery (97 kWh net) to charge from 10 to 80% in 18 minutes. Today, this is still a very good figure, but the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door offers almost double.

With a battery made up of 2,660 cylindrical cells, which are much easier to cool than prismatic cells grouped into modules, charging power reaches up to 600 kW (this is the maximum possible with CCS chargers, as beyond this power level water-cooled connectors are required). As a result, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door needs only 10 minutes to charge from 10 to 80%. It remains to be seen whether this charging performance will be confirmed in real-world conditions. We managed to test a Porsche Taycan Turbo that reached a maximum of 292 kW, close to the promised 320 kW.

For now, we do not yet know the prices of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupe, but the Porsche Taycan Turbo starts at €177,000, the Turbo S at €211,000, while the flagship Turbo GT and Turbo GT with the Weissach Package are offered at the same price of €241,100. Most likely, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupe will be even more expensive.
