Mercedes-AMG revealed the new G 63 4×4² in advance to the G-Class Private Lounge members and it looks every inch ready for the apocalypse. The new model comes with portal axles, as expected, and greater ground clearance.

Nine years have passed since Mercedes presented the sophisticated G63 AMG 6×6. Others seven since the spectacular G500 4×4². Later on, in 201, the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet saw the light of day. The time has finally come for another groundbreaking off-roader with a three-pointed star in the radiator grille. So here is the 2023 Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4². Toni Mantele, Head of Product Management for the G-Class brings the details the off-road enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4 (9)

A 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (M177) powers the Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4². It sends 585 PS (577 HP) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque to both axles via a nine-speed automatic transmission and a permanent four-wheel drive system, just like the G 63. The carmaker keeps the performance figures under wraps.

But there is no way in the (off-road) world this G 63 4×4² could be as fast as the regular G 63. Higher ground clearance (351 millimeters/13.8 inches), greater weight, complicated geometry and worse aerodynamics significantly slow it down. Besides, no one would buy one to go racing. Speaking of off-road performance, the wading depth goes as far (or as deep) as 910 millimeters (35.8 inches). An independent suspension shows up at the front to replace the solid axle of the previous G 63 4×4².

Mercedes highlights that it is “the last of its kind,” meaning that it is the last ICE-powered version.

It now rides on gargantuan 22-inch wheels and it sports roof-mounted LED bars. Mercedes painted the presentation cars in either green or dark red and fitted them with plenty of carbon fiber all over, the spare wheel cover included.

There is even more carbon fiber on board, plus ambient lighting and a digital interior mirror. It comes as no surprise that the seats are wrapped in leather and so is the steering wheel.

To keep its exclusivity, Mercedes-AMG will roll the G 63 4×4² in a limited edition series. But there is no info yet about how limited. We’ll all find out more when Mercedes decides to release the official details.
