The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE has qualified for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award after undergoing tests carried out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The luxury SUV earned superior rating for front crash prevention thanks to the systems that it is equipped with.

It was the Pre-Safe Brake system got the Mercedes-Benz GLE at the top of the safest vehicles ranking. But even without the feature, the GLE managed to avoid a collision in the 12 mph IIHS track test.

Switching on to the 25 mph test, the impact speed was reduced to almost half, by 12 mph. The vehicle fitted with the Pre-Safe Brake system slowed by an average of 24 mph in the same test, almost coming to a standstill. The optional safety system also includes a front collision warning feature that fully complies with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.

The GLE-Class also got good ratings in the IIHS small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

To qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in all five crash-worthiness tests and have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating.
