After a year in which it launched numerous electric models – the GLC EV, C-Class EV, GLB, GLA, CLA 45 4Matic, AMG GT 4-door Coupe and AMG GT SUV – Mercedes will introduce no fewer than 11 combustion-engine models and just four electric models in 2027, despite growing demand for electric cars in Europe.
In a way, this was to be expected, as 2026 saw the launch of numerous new electric models featuring advanced technologies, such as 800V electrical architectures, the dedicated MB.EA platform for the GLC EV and C-Class EV, the VAN.EA platform for the new VLE vans, and the new GLB EV and GLA EV based on the MMA multi-powertrain platform, also featuring 800V technology. Meanwhile, the AMG.EA platform introduces YASA axial-flux motors and batteries with cylindrical cells for the AMG GT 4-door Coupe and AMG GT SUV.
The year 2026 was Mercedes’ busiest in terms of new product launches, as alongside the electric models mentioned above, the company also introduced numerous combustion-engine and PHEV models, including the facelifted GLE, GLS, S-Class and C-Class, all of which received extensive updates.
Therefore, next year Mercedes will focus more on bringing its newly unveiled models to market and introducing additional powertrain variants, although several important new models are also scheduled to debut.
In October 2020, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius announced the Electric First strategy, but subsequently went further, setting a much more ambitious target: Electric Only by 2030, albeit with the qualification that this would apply only where market conditions allowed.
However, the outdated electric technology used in the EQE, EQS, EQA and EQB resulted in sales figures well below expectations. Consequently, in 2024 Källenius revised the company’s forecasts, setting a target for electric and PHEV models to account for 50% of sales by 2030.
Until this year, Mercedes’ PHEV sales had been performing very well. However, following the sharp decline in demand for European premium models in China and fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers in the PHEV segment, Mercedes’ plug-in hybrid sales have fallen dramatically.
By contrast, sales of fully electric models have increased. For the first time, in the third quarter of 2026, electric cars accounted for more than 15% of Mercedes-Benz Cars sales, with 68,400 units out of a total of 407,000 vehicles, driven by the introduction of new technologies. During the first nine months of 2026, Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 165,500 electric vehicles out of a total of 1,244,400 units.
The problem, however, is that electric car sales in Europe have begun to grow at an accelerated pace. This trend has been driven by rising fuel prices resulting from the war in Iran, the launch of an increasing number of new and attractive electric models, and an influx of aggressively priced Chinese electric vehicles, despite the tariffs imposed by the EU on Chinese-made EVs.
As a result, during the first nine months of 2026, electric car sales in Europe reached 1.93 million units, representing a market share of 22.7% and an increase of 48.5% compared with the same period in 2025. Meanwhile, Mercedes has only just exceeded the 15% threshold.
Below is the list of new Mercedes combustion-engine and electric models scheduled for 2027. The main highlights include the expansion of the G-Class family with the G-Class Cabriolet and the baby G-Class, which will be available with both hybrid and electric powertrains, as well as the new electric E-Class, which will replace the EQE. The launch of the electric E-Class will also coincide with a facelift for the conventional E-Class.
