Think a car is safest when nobody is driving it? Seems about right. No mileage abuse. No motorway salt. No scraped bumper in carpark. But cars are meant to move though and those that go nowhere for months tend to lose their owners most cash.
Here’s the problem:
Stationary does not equal stopped. Batteries continue to drain. Tyres continue to go flat. Brakes seize up. It’s all silent, and the car looks okay from the outside.

Why A Parked Car Is Never Really Resting
The average vehicle sits much more than it drives. According to the federal government, household vehicles are parked 95% of the day on average. That’s not a problem. Daily commuting still kickstarts your stuff.
The trouble starts when a car goes months without moving at all.
Consider what a car is. Rubber, fluid, metal and electronics compacted together. Each of those materials hates being stagnant. Oil settles. Rubber compresses. Moisture penetrates and nothing evaporates it.
Most people grasp this concept when it applies to their possessions. When downsizing, deploying or moving between homes families rent furniture storage instead of cramming the sofa, bed frames and dining room table in a damp garage or on the driveway. No one leaves a couch out in the elements for months and thinks it won’t be damaged. Vehicles deserve the same consideration. Battery Drain: The First Thing To Die
Ask any mechanic what fails first on a stored car. The answer never changes.
It’s the battery.
Today’s cars never really turn off. Alarms, keyless entry receivers, clocks, trackers and dozens of control modules all draw power 24/7. That draw is known as parasitic drain, and it kills a good battery in two to four weeks.
No, it’s not just a dead battery. Lead-acid batteries form sulphate crystals if they are allowed to remain at a partial charge, and those crystals irreversibly reduce the battery’s capacity. Keep at it long enough and no amount of charging will recover it. AAA says about one in four roadside calls is battery-related.
How to stop it:
- Fit a trickle charger or smart battery maintainer
- Disconnect the negative terminal for long-term storage
- Skip short “warm up” drives that never fully recharge it
Flat Spots: When Tyres Remember Where They Parked
Here’s something owners rarely think about…
Tyres are round because air pressure forces them to be. Leave your two-tonne automobile planted on the same four patches of rubber for several months and the tyre will slowly deform where it contacts the ground. Bingo! A flat spot.
If you drive on flat-spotted tyres you’ll feel a vibration through the wheel like it’s buckled. Occasionally the rubber warms up and the spot goes away. More often it doesn’t, and your only solution is four new tyres.
Cold exacerbates it because rigid rubber retains form for longer. Low pressure also increases it.
Simple fixes:
- Inflate tyres slightly above normal pressure before storage
- Move the car a few feet monthly to change the contact patch
- Store on a flat, dry surface rather than grass or gravel
- Use jack stands for anything longer than six months
Seized Calipers And Rusting Brakes
Brake discs are made from bare metal. Bare metal + moisture = rust. Rust begins to form after days.
Surface rust doesn’t matter. Comes right off in a few stops. The problem is the caliper.
Calipers use a piston that moves in/out as well as slide pins that have grease on them. Rust chips away at the seals when sitting idle. Corrosion forms on the piston and the grease oxidizes. The caliper freezes up on the disc.
What a seized caliper feels like:
- The car pulls hard to one side under braking
- One wheel gets extremely hot after a short drive
- A grinding or dragging noise that never goes away
Even worse, brake fluid actually absorbs water out of the air. When left sitting for a year or two, that water reduces the boiling point and rusts out the lines from within.
Parking with the handbrake on creates one additional hazard, brake pads can rust onto the disc. Wood chocks are a better option.
The Damage Nobody Sees Coming
And here’s the part that catches most people out…
The problems above are only half the story.
Gasoline goes bad. Petrol starts decomposing after around three months. Ethanol blends also absorb water. Water gums up fuel injectors and plugs filters.
Fluids quit lubricating. Oil film moves off the cylinder walls. Metal is exposed to condensation.
Rubber gets brittle. Belts, hoses and door seals crack when they’re deprived of heat and motion.
Pests move in. Engine bays provide quiet warmth for nests, and rodents chew through wiring insulation. That single issue can result in a four-figure repair bill.
Inside takes a beating. Moisture becomes mould underneath the carpets and sun through the windshield cracks the dashboard.
Storing A Vehicle Properly Costs Far Less Than Fixing One
Work it out. Battery, 4 tyres, 2 calipers, fuel system flush and a gnawed wiring loom easily comes to way over 2 grand. Off a car no one even drove.
Protected space changes that equation. Indoors or under cover you take away the sun, the rain, the temperature fluctuations and most of the pests with one swift move. It also remedies a second dilemma since most people who are looking for a place to store a car for six months are also those who are boxing, moving and storing furniture at the same time. Store the car and the housewares in the same place and you cut down to one bill and one trip when it’s time to take everything back out.
Before locking the door, run through the basics:
- Wash and dry the vehicle so dirt doesn’t eat the paint
- Change the oil so acidic old oil isn’t sitting in the engine
- Top up the fuel tank and add a stabiliser
- Connect a battery maintainer, or disconnect the battery
- Overinflate the tyres slightly and skip the handbrake
- Cover the exhaust and air intake against rodents
The Bottom Line On Sitting Still
If you take a car and don’t use it, you’re not preserving it. You’re just storing it…expensively.
Battery drain, flat spots and seized calipers are the results of moving parts not moving. None of them have warning indicators to let you know they are coming. They all show up at once when you start the car again.
Allow the car someplace dry and safe to reside, prepare it correctly and visit it every now and then. If you do this, you’ll have the same car rolling out that you drove in.
