The unbelievable has happened. Mercedes-Benz has just turned a farm tool into a luxury vehicle with the launch of the X-Class. It may be late to the party of the traditional pick-up trucks, but it’s bound to make up the difference that separates it from its rivals, starting October, when it will hit the showrooms worldwide.
Propelled by a 2.3-liter turbocharged diesel engine, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is bound to show good manners on the tarmac and high capabilities on rough terrain. On the inside, the X sports the dials borrowed from the C-Class mid-size sedan, while the floating screen with optional COMAND Online infotainment system, this is the biggest display in this mid-size pickup segment (7.0-inch display is offered as standard). The Dynamic Select provides a choice between Comfort, Eco, Sport, Manual and Off-road driving modes. A Winter Package (heated front seats and windscreen washer nozzles) and a Parking Package (parking assistance and a 360-degree camera) will be available if the buyer ticks all the right boxes.
“The X-Class will drive like a Mercedes”, the premium brand executive promise the evening they send the vehicle into the world in an official presentation taking place in Cape Town, South Africa. Less muscular than the concept that we have been presented with, the production ready X-Class boasts a wade depth of 600mm, a maximum payload rated at 1,042 kg and a towing capacity of 3.5 tons, being nothing short of other vehicles in its class.
