Mercedes is expanding the G-Class range with a cabrio version. The Mercedes G-Class Cabrio will soon be available in all global markets. The first three official photos of the camouflaged car have now been revealed.
The current generation of the Mercedes G-Class, launched in 2018 and facelifted in 2024, has been a major success, with sales already surpassing those of its predecessor. The 400,000th G-Class was produced on December 4, 2020, and only three years later, in April 2023, the 500,000th unit rolled out of the Graz factory in Austria.
At the general shareholders’ meeting in the fall of 2020, Ola Källenius stated that Mercedes would focus on developing the G-Class lineup and AMG models. In the case of the G-Class, this strategy has proven successful. Although at first glance an AMG version of an off-roader like the G-Class may seem like a contradiction, it has been immensely successful and contributes significantly to strong global sales.
The only version that is not selling as well as expected is the electric G-Class EQ, although from a technological standpoint it is an exceptional achievement, with four motors and a battery protected by a carbon-fiber plate.
As planned, Mercedes is now expanding the G-Class lineup with a cabrio version, which existed on previous generations but was not offered on the new generation launched in 2018.
After releasing a teaser showing the car’s silhouette, Mercedes is now revealing the first official photos from early testing taking place in Austria. Winter testing in Sweden will follow, during which the thermal insulation of the fabric roof will also be evaluated.
Mercedes says that the G-Class Cabrio will debut with a special edition featuring a fabric roof that covers the trunk and a large part of the cabin. The side panels and rear pillar remain in place so as not to compromise the vehicle’s structural rigidity.
The Mercedes G-Class Cabrio will be available worldwide, including in the U.S., where the cabriolet version was previously unavailable.
Nothing is known yet about the engines, but it is very likely that the G-Class Cabrio will adopt the powertrains introduced in the facelifted G-Class, all featuring 48-volt mild-hybrid technology with a 20-PS electric motor. These are the G 450 d (3-liter inline-six, 367 PS), G 500 (3-liter inline-six with 449 PS instead of a V8), and the AMG G 63 (4-liter V8, 585 PS).
