The automotive website JESMB reports that the new Mercedes G-Class baby will be delayed until spring 2028. As with the CLA, the all-electric version will make its debut first, followed by a mild-hybrid variant.

The launch of the Mercedes G-Class Baby appears to have been pushed back by several months, from summer 2027 to spring 2028. The news was reported by JESMB. This means that four and a half years will have passed between Ola Källenius’s announcement at the Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 2023 and the car’s market launch.

Known as the “Little G”, the Mercedes Baby G-Class will measure around 4.5 metres in length, making it almost 40 cm shorter than the full-size G-Class. Its footprint will be similar to that of the GLA, but its design will be completely different, featuring a boxy, angular body similar to that of its larger sibling.

A few months ago, we presented a computer-generated rendering based on spy photos circulating online. The image revealed the car’s boxy silhouette, short overhangs and flared wheel arches.

The all-electric version will debut first. According to JESMB, it will feature two permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors developed by Mercedes: an eATS 2.0 unit paired with a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, as in the electric CLA, and an eATS 1.6 motor on the front axle that will engage only when needed.

As with the CLA, charging power will reach 320 kW. The Baby G-Class will also use the same 800-volt technology and an 85 kWh battery.

A mild-hybrid version will follow, featuring a more powerful electric motor than is normally found in mild-hybrid systems. This variant was not originally planned, but Mercedes has confirmed its development to the press. It will be powered by the new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine developed by Mercedes in Germany and manufactured by Geely in China. The engine is used across Mercedes’ new compact model range, from the CLA to the GLB.

It is not yet clear whether the new model will use the MMA platform found in the CLA and GLA or a modified version offering greater off-road capabilities.

The new Mercedes G-Class Baby will be manufactured at the company’s recently expanded plant in Kecskemét, Hungary. The factory currently produces the CLA and GLB, and production of the A-Class has recently been transferred there. The new Mercedes C-Class EV will also be produced here in parallel with Bremen. In the future, the new electric GLC will also be manufactured in Kecskemét.
