Mercedes-AMG will unveil its new electric GT SUV, codenamed X591, on October 17 in Stuttgart. Sales are expected to begin in spring 2027, as former AMG boss Michael Schiebe announced in February 2026.
The new model will be Mercedes-AMG’s first standalone electric SUV, with no equivalent model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. It will also become the second production model based on the dedicated AMG.EA electric architecture, following the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which was unveiled in May 2026.
And the GT SUV will not be the final AMG.EA model. Michael Schiebe, who has since moved to Mercedes’ Board of Management as head of Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management, has confirmed that a third model is also planned: a coupe-SUV derived from the GT SUV.
Lower and sleeker than the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63
The proportions of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV are clearly different from those of the AMG GLE 63. In fact, the two models share no technical basis. The electric GT SUV is lower and longer, with a more aerodynamic silhouette.
The design is characterized by a long bonnet and a steeply sloping roofline, giving the SUV a strong visual connection with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. Despite its SUV body style, the GT SUV is therefore expected to sit closer to the ground than a conventional high-performance SUV.
The taller body will provide more room for rear-seat passengers, while the driving position will remain lower than in a traditional SUV. Like the GT 4-Door Coupe, the GT SUV will also feature a front trunk, or frunk. Its capacity is expected to be at least comparable to the 41-litre (VDA) compartment found in the four-door coupe.
Interior carried over from the GT 4-Door Coupe
The cabin will largely mirror the layout of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The driver gets a 10.2-inch digital instrument display, while the central infotainment screen measures 14 inches.
The system runs on Mercedes’ new MB.OS operating system, which integrates Google services and AI-based functions from ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Bing. A separate 14-inch display will be available for the front passenger.
106-kWh battery and 600 kW charging
Unlike Mercedes’ multi-energy MMA platform, AMG.EA was designed exclusively for electric vehicles. Michael Schiebe has confirmed that Mercedes-AMG has no plans to install an internal-combustion engine on the architecture.
The GT SUV is expected to use the same 106-kWh net battery as the GT 4-Door Coupe. The battery consists of 2,660 cylindrical cells arranged into 18 modules and operates on an 800-volt electrical architecture.
Maximum charging power could reach 600 kW, making the AMG GT SUV one of the fastest-charging production EVs on the market. The 600-kW figure corresponds to the maximum power capability of CCS charging infrastructure.
Mercedes has not yet confirmed the SUV’s official range. The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe offers up to around 700–800 km of WLTP range, depending on version. However, the SUV will be heavier and less aerodynamically efficient than the coupe, so a WLTP range of approximately 600–700 km is expected.
Up to 1,169 PS
As with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, the GT SUV is expected to be offered in three versions, all using the same 106-kWh battery.
The range is expected to include:
- Mercedes-AMG GT 63 – up to 1,169 PS, with three electric motors
- Mercedes-AMG GT 55 – 816 PS, with three electric motors
- Mercedes-AMG GT 53 – 544 PS, with two electric motors
This would give the GT 63 an output exceeding 1,000 PS, putting it firmly into the territory of the most powerful electric SUVs ever produced.
The chassis technology will also be shared with the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The GT SUV is expected to feature adaptive air suspension, active anti-roll stabilization and rear-wheel steering. Rear tyres could be as wide as 325 mm, emphasizing the model’s performance focus.
Built in Sindelfingen
Production of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will take place at Mercedes-Benz’s Sindelfingen plant in Germany, alongside the GT 4-Door Coupe.
The first customer deliveries are expected in spring 2027. The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will enter a rapidly expanding segment of high-performance electric SUVs, competing with models such as the Porsche Cayenne Electric and Bentley’s first fully electric model, the Bentley Torcal.
