2017 Mercedes E-Class Coupe sees its secrets unfold ahead of its late-2016 premiere. Our exclusive spy pictures reveal the first design cues of Mercedes’ 6-Series rival.
Heavy disguise aside, the prototype caught by our spy photographers shows clear design similarities with the bigger S-Class Coupe, as well as with the recently unveiled C-Class Coupe. The sloping roofline abruptly tapers towards the rear, whose shape has been interestingly hidden with what appears to be a fake boot – not very dissimilar to the one used by BMW’s rivalling 6-Series Coupe.
Mercedes’ modular MRA platform, already underpinning the C-Class and S-Class, will sit at the base of the new E-Class Coupe. The new four-seat GT will make extensive use of lightweight materials such as aluminum in order to become lighter, more rigid and more efficient.
The engine range is also expected to mimic the one offered alongside its four-door brother, which means the 2017 Mercedes E-Class Coupe will receive all-new four and six-cylinder modular units constructed from a multiple of identical 0.5-liter cylinders.
Take center stage will be taken by the staple new 2.0-liter L4 diesel engine available in 150 and 195 hp flavors. Also new is the 3-liter in-line six-cylinder turbo (code M256) said to develop as much as 430 hp while at the upper end of the range the AMG 63 will offer an estimated 600 hp courtesy of the AMG sourced 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 of GT fame. A Plug-In Hybrid is also earmarked for production with the power of the electric engine expected to range from 102 HP to 122 HP compared with the current output of 82 to 116 HP. The 2017 E-Class Coupe will also get the new nine-speed automatic transmission.
Autonomous driving technology will also be at the fore-front of the marketing push for the new E-Class Coupe with a raft of advanced autonomous systems echoing those already offered on the production E-Class sedan, cool remote parking system included.
Prices are said to rise compared with those of the current generation, a logical decision following the move upmarket for the the all-new 2017 Mercedes E-Class Coupe. The new model will debut in late 2016 with first deliveries expected to take place next Autumn.
