1993 W202 C36 AMG

The C 36 AMG sedan holds a special place in the AMG history, being the first-ever AMG developed car to be sold by Mercedes through its very own dealer network. Based on the 1995 W202 C-class, the C36 was a limited production model.

It featured a plethora of aerodynamic tweaks. Among these a new front apron, new side skirts and rear apron, all reducing lift at highway speeds. The C 36 AMG was also easy to spot thanks to its unique carbon-fiber trim on the B-pillar and the 17-inch AMG mono-block 5-spoke wheels.

Its inline-six 4 valves/cylinder engine was also trully special. Derived from the unit found in the C280, it was characterized by a 1.1 mm increase in bore diameter and 18.9 mm in stroke length, also featuring more aggressive camshafts and a free-flowing exhaust. The compression was also different, as the AMG engineers took the ratio all the way up to 10.5:1. by fettling with the electronics.

AMG’s result was 276 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 284 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, 82 more than the C280 and 36 more than the BMW M3. Only one thing was missing. A manual transmission was never even an option with a five-speed automatic offered as standard. In its defense, the auto-gearbox did offer a manual shifting mode.
