Mercedes will launch the new GLE in Mercedes-AMG guise this year. Hence, the German brand finishes refining its future rival for the Audi RS Q8 and BMW X5 M and the first prototypes are currently being tested.
The ultra-sport SUV category is still in full swing. At BMW, we have just seen the renewed the X5 and X6 M with new variants developing up to 625 horsepower (Competition version). At Audi, the Q8 will win its RS clothes and climb to at least 600 horses all round.
The GLE of the current generation already has an AMG variant in the form of the AMG GLE 53 4Matic, a version with a 435 hp 3.0 six-in-line under the hood. That could be better, according to the men and women from Affalterbach. So, the GLE will soon recover its top badge “Mercedes-AMG GLE 63”. The new model has just been surprised on the Nordschleife (see video), in a slightly camouflaged version.
More than 600 horses?
Like all the big models of the AMG range, the GLE 63 will use the 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo dear to the German manufacturer, in a version probably pushed to a little more than 600 hp. This power unit is already widely used by Mercedes-AMG. We bet on a copy that is at least as strong as the 612 hp version, which Mercedes-Benz uses in the Mercedes-AMG E 63.
It will be lighter and more efficient than the old GLE 63, whose 5.5-liter V8 bi-turbo engine developed a maximum of 585 horsepower. And it may be presented in a few days at the Los Angeles 2019 show.
