Small doesn’t inherently mean cheap. Sometimes the most exquisite objects come in tiny packages. Such is the case of the Mercedes W196 Amalgam 1:8 scale model.
The model is expected to fetch between 4,000 and 5,000 euros at the Bonhams auction “The Mercedes-Benz Sale”, which takes place 19 March 2016 in Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.
Hand-made, with removable engine cover to reveal straight 8 engine in incredible detail, the tiny piece of modelling jewelry is a faithful reproduction of the car piloted by Juan Manuel Fangio at the 1955 British Grand Prix held at Aintree.
A race of legend, with “The Train” of Moss and Fangio driving so close their cars on their way to the finish line in an unbeatable first and second place. Ironically, Bonhams auction house was also responsible for the sale of the original car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2013.
The 1:8 Mercedes W196 by Amalgam was limited to a maximum of 196 units. This particular model is the number 32, listed in “as new” condition. Mounted on a black stand with maker’s and limited edition plaque, it comes with Perspex display case, together with all the original packaging as when new and the Certificate of Authenticity from Amalgam.
