The all-new 2020 Mercedes GLA is finally here! Mercedes-Benz is working hard behind the scenes on a completely new GLA, a car that has now surfaced for the first time in camouflaged prototype guise.
Mercedes-Benz made it no secret that it is going to place an ever increasing number of compact models on its MFA architecture, the front-wheel drive platform that the brand uses for all its C-segment cars. The compact family includes the A-Class Limousine, the CLA, the CLA Shooting Brake, the B-Class and the soon to be revealed GLB. The seventh newcomer will be the completely new GLA, a car that will be positioned between the regular A-Class and the bigger GLB.
From an aesthetic point of view, the new generation of GLA will take over the design elements I’ve already seen on the latest A-Class, but also a series of lines introduced for the first time on GLC facelift. Where the GLB is more SUV-like, the GLA remains true to the recipe of its predecessor and that means that this second generation GLA is in fact a hatchback that sits higher and is peppered with SUV-like details. In these world exclusive espionage photos we see a hatchback whose rear door on the right has been replaced by a piece of clear plastic.
Mercedes-Benz supplied the current GLA with a wide mix of gasoline and diesel engines. At the top of the list, we find a 45 AMG version with nearly 400 hp. Diesel fans will have versions of 1.5 and 2.0 liters, while customers who prefer petrol engines will be able to drive the 1.3-liter or 2.0-liter turbo engines. We expect another Mercedes-AMG 45 version to be released, a variant that for the first time in GLA history will be joined by a less extreme 35 AMG version. The A-Class is in Mercedes-AMG GLA A 35 guise good for 306 hp.
Also, with the Q30 and QX30, Infiniti has its own car based on the current GLA. It was recently announced that the successor of the current generation Q30 and QX30 will be placed on its own platform.
