Sales of Mercedes-EQ electric models rose by 90% in the second quarter of 2022 to 23,500 units, despite a challenging economic climate. In contrast, total sales fell by 16% in both the second quarter and the first half of 2022.
The semiconductor crisis, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine have dramatically influenced Mercedes sales worldwide.
However, Mercedes has achieved some remarkable results. Sales of pure electric models in the Mercedes-EQ range saw a solid 90% increase to 23,500 units in Q2 2022. Mercedes sold 45,400 electric models in the first half of 2022, of which 8,500 were luxury Mercedes EQS limousines.
Top-End Luxury
The flagship Mercedes S-Class recorded the best result for the second quarter in history with 21,700 units sold. Mercedes-Maybach set an absolute record for the second quarter of 4,400 units sold ( 25%).
Since the Mercedes-AMG models were affected by the chip crisis, the global sales of the Top-End Luxury category (Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach, G-Class, GLS, S-Class, EQS) have decreased by 16% to 71,900 units.
Core Luxury
The new Mercedes C-Class is the best-selling model of the entire lineup. With 84,900 units sold in the first 6 months of 2022, the Mercedes C-Class sales have grown by 5%. A result almost just as good was recorded by Mercedes GLC with 82,400 units (-4%) sold in the first 6 months of 2022, yet the mid-size SUV is at the end of its current lifecycle.
Sales of the Core Luxury category, which includes the C-Class and E-Class, totaled 275,900 units (-6%).
Entry luxury
Sales of compact electric models accounted for 14% market share in the Entry Luxury category, an increase of 50% compared to the second quarter of 2021. Mercedes EQA sales increased by more than 50% to 7,000 units and Mercedes EQB achieved a good result with 5,500 units sold in Q2 2022.
Sales by region
Sales have fallen in all regions of the world. The largest decrease was registered in Asia (-20%) due to the massive decrease in China (-25%). China is severely affected by the return of the Covid pandemic in many overcrowded cities, which has led to declining sales.
Europe figures fell by only 10% and North America numbers by only 3%. Since China is the largest Mercedes market, the decline there has dramatically affected the overall sales result which has fallen by 16%.
