Mercedes will offer for the first time a convertible version of S-Class based on the recently launched S-Class Coupe.

Since January 2007 when Mercedes presented at Detroit the new Ocean Drive concept, rumors have emerged about a possible S-Class Convertible. Rumors were not confirmed at that time, but after sacrificing the Maybach brand, Mercedes has decided to change its strategy and to extend the luxury vehicles line-up. Therefore, based on the new S-Class, the luxury line-up also features both the short and the long saloon versions and the recently launched S-Class Coupe which replaces the old CL.

S-Class will have the largest luxury range in the world with 5 models

The luxury line-up will be extended with an even longer version of the S-Class saloon named Maybach, another extra-long Pullman limo and a luxury convertible, thus becoming the most extensive luxury line-up in the world. Unlike the Ocean Drive concept, S Class convertible will have only two doors and not four, as the original concept, and it will provide four full size extremely luxurious seats. The cabriolet with a conventional softtop (a rigid retractable roof would have been too long and heavy for this segment) will be based on coupe’s shape and will feature under the bonnet the well known V8 bi-turbo 4.7 liters engine which can deliver 455 HP and 700 Nm (449 HP and 516 lb-ft for the American market).

S-Class Cabrio will have two doors and not four like Ocean Drive Concept

At least in the United States, the S-Class convertible will most likely offer a 4Matic all-wheel drive, while in Europe both versions might even be possible. Even though the S-Class Coupe already has an AMG version, it is highly unlikely that the new convertible will also feature an AMG engine under the bonnet, but it is not excluded either. S-Class Coupe will share the luxurious interior with the new upcoming convertible which will provide the latest types of assistance and multimedia systems from the S Class. The advanced technology will include the Magic Body Control active suspension while the pneumatic suspension comes as standard.

S-Class Cabrio will be launched in the second half of 2016 and the main rivals will certainly be Aston Martin Vanquish Volante and Bentley Continental GTC.
