New spy shots of the future Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 AMG Coupe

If BMW wants a piece of Mercedes-Benz B-Class’ pie with the new 2 Series Active Tourer, in the case of coupe SUVs, it’s Mercedes-Benz that’s trailing behind the X6. The GLE Coupe, though, looks  likely to give Mercedes-Benz a serious jumpstart.

We’ve recently caught a glimpse of a GLE Coupe convoy under heavy camouflage but this time the BMW X6 competitor has shed most of its dazzling vinyls and shows us almost nothing but skin.

The car in these images is the sportier AMG version or, at least, a car wearing the AMG visual package – though the latter would make little sense. On the other hand, it could also be the visually quasi-identical AMG Sport version which is expected to debut at the North American International Auto Show.

Apart from the sloping roofline which we could see from even the first spy shots taken, these pictures show more details for the front and rear bumpers and the sides. As expected, the GLE Coupe looks just like a Mercedes-Benz version of the BMW X6.

We’re going to keep saying this for a while until everyone comes to terms with it: Mercedes-Benz is changing the naming scheme for their model range and, although it seems a bit off at this time, it really makes sense once you get the grips. You can read more about it here.

So, this GLE Coupe is basically the new iteration of the current ML Class in a coupe form. There will also be a new “standard” GLE which will replace the outgoing ML Class.

In terms of engines, the GLE 63 AMG Coupe will be using the same 4.0 litre V8 engine found in the new Mercedes-AMG GT developing 462 or 510 hp, depending on the spec. This will place it on a collision course with the BMW X6 M. Can’t wait for them to make contact.
