Mercedes-Benz redefines ultra-luxury with its new top-of-the-range Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand. An exclusive preview event hosted by none other than sunny Santa Barbara, California, allowed the German automaker to unleash all the secrets behind the upcoming Mercedes-Maybach S-Class flagship sedan.
The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the very epitome of peerless exclusivity and the world’s quietest production vehicle. A car which marks the pinnacle of automobile technology and at the same time sits at the top of the ever-expanding S-Class model family, which now also includes the S-Class Coupé and the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID. On-board technology and connectivity are discreetly integrated beneath the finest materials, created with unrivalled craftsmanship and exquisite handcrafted details.
Design-wise, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is a statement in quintessential luxury. Compared with its regular siblings, it features more assertive styling features. Three double louvres in chrome within the radiator and additional vertical chrome trim emphasise high quality and elegance, a succesful theme continued in the rear area. Along with the extended wheelbase, one of the key distinguishing details is the striking new side-line with full chrome surrounding. The rear door has been shortened by 66 mm and has no triangular windows, as these were relocated into the C-pillar, melding seamlessly into the perfectly proportioned profile. The rear seats are located way beyond the door cutout, for a feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity, with the elegant Maybach Manufaktur logo (a double M inside an arched triangle) adorning the C-pillars on both sides. Additionally, exclusive 20-inch forged, light-alloy wheels are introduced for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.
The highly innovative aluminium hybrid construction of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class vehicle body is a mix of low-weight materials. Cast aluminium and high-strength steels form the largest side panel made in series production in a single piece, with repeated reinforcements at the base of the B-pillar and at the transition from the almost square door cutout to the wheel arch, all in the name of additional rigidity.
Specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven, Mercedes-Maybach benefits from an increase of 200 mm for both its overall length (5.453 mm) and wheelbase (3.365 mm) by comparison with the long wheelbase S-Class, most of this, the result of the extension between the B and C-pillar. The altered shape of the roofline also paved the way for further raising the head clearance.
The results are felt entirely in the back. The specification has been refined even more with standard-fit executive seats on both left and right. Electrically operated via the typical Mercedes control panels in the rear doors, the innovative seats feature calf support, freely adjustable for length and angle, and offer a unique level of comfort due to the revolutionary adjustment kinematics system. The backrest can be adjusted separately at a maximum angle of 43.5 degrees with the footwell and seat remaining unchanged as reference points, while the cushion can also be adjusted separately for inclination and horizontal positioning. The Rear Seat Comfort package brings individually adjustable multicontour seats and an ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle.
Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can also be specified with the First-Class rear suite. The centre console in the rear becomes a visual continuation of the front console on the centre tunnel and hosts innovative thermo cup holders with Peltier technology to cool or warm drinks over a longer period of time. Standard-fit are two tables made of light alloy and leather inserts and can be easily folded in or out using one hand. Two articulated joints on the stem and underside of the table enable it to be adjusted to almost any position.
A second, standard-fitted THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system in the rear brings two additional climate zones for the rear seats and delivers maximum climatic control in the rear. All at the touch of the control panel on the back of the centre console which allows the temperature and air distribution to be set individually for the left and right sides. Using COMAND Online, the driver can also adjust the automatic climate control system for the back of the vehicle too. For targeted climate control, Mercedes-Maybach is also the host of two nozzles placed in the centre console, in the rear footwell and on the B-pillars.
The cabin of the new Mercedes-Maybach flagship is a contemporary reinterpretation of the already exquisite interior of the regular S-Class sedan. Sensuously curved, fine-wood trim with a handcrafted feel surrounds the entire rear seating system, with the seat-back lining, doors and nozzle coverings all resplendent in fine wood. Exclusives touches such as the perfume AGARWOOD for fragrancing – part of the AIR-BALANCE package, two silver-plated, handcrafted silver-plated champagne flutes made by Robbe & Berking, handstitched door trim, front centre armrests with nappa leather or exclusive nappa leather upholstery with embossed Maybach crests, trim parts in wood/chrome and leather at shoulder height in the door panels, chrome-plated tweeter grilles and fibre-optic cables for the ambience lighting to the side on the armrest plus the central IWC analogue clock with numbers and indicators individually applied, discreetly but deeply underline the special appeal of this extraordinary vehicle.
A panoramic sliding sunroof is standard, including a fixed panoramic glass roof in the rear section and a top-sliding power sunroof. As a result, the interior can be ventilated as desired. As an extra, the MAGIC SKY CONTROL technology from Mercedes-Benz can also allow the glass to be switched to light or dark at the touch of a button. Electric roller sunblinds in the rear doors and small roller sunblinds for the triangular windows in the C-pillar reflect the great attention to detail, keeping the passengers in the rear safe from sunlight and prying eyes. In addition to the leather options for the S-Class, a designo roof liner in nappa leather is available exclusively for the Mercedes-Maybach.
A Burmester high-end 3D surround sound audio system expands on the standard 10-speaker system and offers the best in-car sound experience in the world by virtue of 24 high-performance speakers and 24 separate amplifier channels with a total output of 1540 watts. As a visual highlight, the tweeters in the mirror triangle of the driver’s door and their counterparts in the rear doors rotate through 360 degrees when the head unit is turned on, moving ten millimetres towards the passengers in a spiral motion. This movement aligns the tweeters to give the optimum sound impression. And this is not all. If the ambience lighting is switched on, the tweeters are also illuminated in one of the seven available colours.
Concealed beneath all the exquisite design touches and materials that define the exterior and the cabin is a suite of technology to make any journey as productive or relaxing as one desires. At the heart of the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are two noble bi-turbo engines, adorned with some of the most advanced technical solutions in the industry. The top-of-the-range S 600 is powered by a 5.980 cc V12 with an output of 530 hp. With a maximum torque of 830 Nm available from 1900 rpm, it completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, while the top speed is 250 km/h, electronically limited. The entry-level model is powered by a 4.663 cc V8 which generates an output of 455 hp and 700 Nm. 4MATIC all-wheel drive will also be available from June 2015 for the S500, which is equipped as standard with new 9G-TRONIC, the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission in the premium segment. The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 comes with the latest evolution of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission.
Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is also a pinnacle of safety technology. Intelligent Drive systems include PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. Standard-fit are the innovative seat belt buckle extender, beltbag – both part of the PRE-SAFE rear package – and seat cushion airbag. The airbag reduces the load on the ribcage in a front impact and is thus able to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear. It is only activated if the seat is in the reclined position during a crash and is located under the seat cushion upholstery, on top of the plastic seat shell, which is moved by the seat mechanisms. This means that the airbag is always in the right position relative to the occupant, with no danger of submarining.
The seat belt buckle extender is a motorised belt buckle which can be extended upwards by up to 50 mm and retracted by up to 40 mm. It reduces any belt slack in the area of the pelvis and thorax and is furthermore integrated into the PRE-SAFE safety system. This means that in cases where PRE-SAFE is activated in critical driving situations, there is also reversible belt tensioning in the rear via the seat belt buckle extender. The restraint system and passengers are thus better prepared for a possible accident situation.
The commercial debut of the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is scheduled for February 2015. In Germany, prices for the Mercedes-Maybach start at 134,053.50 euros for the S500 version and 187,841.50 euros for the S600 model. Mercedes-Maybach is not an equipment line. It is a sub-brand which melds the perfection down to the last detail of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with a new dimension in exclusivity, all aimed at customers for whom status is paragon.
