Unveiled as a concept car at the Shanghai Motor Show in April 2015 and in series production version at the New York Motor Show in April 2016, the first generation of the Mercedes GLC Coupe (codenamed C253) contributed to the GLC’s very good sales figures to become the best-selling premium mid-size SUV in Europe.

The upcoming coupe SUV will benefit from the sportier proportions of the new-generation GLC, which is 60 mm longer, 4 mm less tall and has a longer wheelbase. It is the rear end that will be modified the most. The rear windscreen will be more sloping but instead of dropping sharply backwards, the roof will extend further towards the rear to create enough headroom in the rear.

The trunk lid will end with a small spoiler and we notice the long, thin two-piece taillights similar to those on the C-Class and S-Class.

As with the C-Class and GLC, there will be no engines with more than four cylinders. The V8 in the AMG sports models is already history as is the inline 6-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel in the GLC 400 d 4Matic.

Like the all-new GLC, the new Mercedes GLC Coupe will be powered by the new diesel and petrol PHEV versions with the larger battery of 31.2 kWh, ready for an electric range of around 100 km, and by the conventional diesel and petrol 48V mild hybrid engines.

While the GLC is currently only available with the 197 HP 2.0-liter diesel, we believe the Mercedes GLC Coupe will also get the more powerful, 265 HP diesel from the C-Class which uses two turbos like all the new modified versions of OM654M diesel engines.

The top AMG versions will get a PHEV powertrain that will combine the AMG A 45’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor for a total output of more than 510 HP, currently offered by the most powerful version AMG GLC 63 S.
