Auto Motor und Sport has published the first pictures of the new Mercedes GLB (code name X247) due to arrive in 2019 based on the new A-Class (X177).

In addition to the A-Class, Mercedes is also launching a new generation of compact models based on the MFA2 front-wheel drive platform. It starts with the A-Class, followed by the GLA, the GLB, as well as CLA and CLA Shooting Brake. The range will be completed with the future B-Class and A-Class sedan.

Mercedes has since some years the idea to introduce a compact seven seater model. The initial plans were to build an additional model based on B-Class like BMW did with 2 Serie Active Tourer/Grand Tourer.

But the SUV boom has changed the Mercedes plans which decide to go for an elongated GLA in GLS style.

The current GLA is anyway very compact, which means that remains enough room for a second SUV with seven seater.

Named GLB, the future compact seven seater will have around 4.60 meters in length and a 500 liter trunk.

The new GLB has short overhangs, vertical front radiator grill typical for a SUV, flat bonnet, horizontal roof and a steep rear window giving the impression of a mini GLS.

GLB will take over the new engine family from the A-Class. The base diesel version is GLB 180 d with Renault 1.5 liter engine and 110 HP followed by the GLB 200 d with the new 2 liter diesel and 150 HP. The top diesel will be GLB 220 d with 190 HP. Renault will offer the new 1.3 liter petrol engines with 160 HP (GLB 200) followed later by a weaker version with 136 HP (GLB 180).

The range will be completed with the Plug-In Hybrid version GLB 220 e which promise a 70 km electric range thanks to a 13.7 kWh battery.

Rumours speaks also about two sporty versions, similar to the new A-Class: AMG GLB 35 with 299 HP from a 2 liter turbo engine and AMG GLB 45 with 408 HP and double clutch gearbox, both combined with 4Matic.

The interior will follow the new layout from the new A-Class with the spectacular new widescreens.

Taking into consideration that the current GLA 180 starts at around 29,000 euro and GLA 180 d at 32,000 euro we expect that the cheapest GLB – the GLB 180 – will cost at least 32,000 euro while the GLB 180 d at least 35,000 euro.
