Mercedes-AMG is preparing a new electric supercar model. Daimler’ performance division has announced that it has started a series of projects to develop electrified and EV models.
More and more manufacturers have introduced in the portfolio electrified versions for the models in their range, and this trend has not gone unnoticed by the sharp eyes of the people at the forefront of performance divisions.
Ola Kallenius, Daimler CEO, was present in Frankfurt, and in an interview with British magazine Autocar, the German manufacturer’s representative mentioned that Mercedes-AMG’s performance division already started the development of electrified models.
“We need to get to the moment when the propulsion system is no longer considered an extremely important thing, because AMG models come with positives that are related to the driving experience. That’s why we started projects to develop electrified versions, but also for making a 100% electric AMG model, ” hesaid.
Mercedes-AMG is not the first to adopt such a strategy and they also produced an electric supercar already. A few years ago, the Germans introduced the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, a supercar with four electric motors capable of delivering 751 hp and 1,000 Nm.
For a short time, the German supercar was the fastest electric model on the Nurburgring circuit, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h occurring in 3.9 seconds. Mercedes has never reported how many copies of the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive it has sold, but voices close to the company claim the number is less than 100 units.
