The Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is a standard in the segment. With figure that spark envy, everyone else tries to beat it. The BMW M8 and the Audi R8 are the latest to try. Can they do it?

The moment of truth has come. The Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster aligns on the starting grid at the Lausitzring Circuit. A BMW M8 and an Audi R8 are its opponents. Will it take them down or will it bow before them? The time has come for us to find out.

How does the Mercedes-AMG GT R manage on the racetrack?

And it is not just any M8, but the top-of-the-range Competition variant, BMW’s most potent series production model. The one pitted on the racetrack is a Convertible version and it is, without a doubt, a luxury model with the personality of a supercar.

The Bimmer is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 625 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, making it accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds.

And then there is the Audi R8 Performance Spyder, with its 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, that provides it with 620 horsepower and 579 Nm of torque. The figures are enough to make it rush from 0 to 100 km/h in a similar 3.1-second time.

And last, but not least, is what we would call the favorite, in the most honest and subjective manner: the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster, with the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that supplies the 585-horspower output and the 700 Nm of torque. Of course, figures make it slower, as it accelerates it takes 3.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. On paper, things seem to be pretty clear. But how do they actually look on the racetrack?

Well, AutoBild posted the race on YouTube. The Audi R8 Performance Spyder, equipped with Michelin Sport Cup tires, needed 1:31,50 minutes to complete a lap.

Shod with Pirelli P Zero, the BMW M8 took 1:32,77 minutes for the same distance.

And then the time came for the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster to shine. Wearing Michelin Sport Cup 2 rubber, the Roadster completed the lap in 1:30,67 minutes. Therefore the figures sent it straight to the top of the ranking.
