At the end of last year, Mercedes-Benz revealed a new GLE and now the time has come to present its logical sister model. We welcome the GLE Coupé, the car that has its sights on the BMW X6. Now also in Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe guise.
The GLE is simply a GLE with a stronger sloping roofline, but that is not entirely correct. Whereas the wheelbase of the outgoing GLE Coupé was identical to that of the regular GLE, the distance between the front and rear axles with this new GLE Coupé is just 6 centimeters shorter than with the regular model. The GLE Coupé with its length of 4.94 meters is about 2.5 centimeters longer than the GLE. That difference in length is caused by the different bumper work.
From outside the GLE Coupé is immediately recognizable as a member of the GLE family. The single slat in the grille is a nod to the other coupé models from Mercedes-Benz. The regular GLE has two slats. If you order a GLE Coupé with AMG Line package, you will get a car with a different front, in which the newly formed grille is the biggest difference in appearance. The windscreen of the GLE Coupé is also flatter. With their horizontal shape, the rear lights correspond with those of Mercedes’ other coupé models.
Not directly available at the market launch, but presented in the flesh at the IAA 2019 Frankfurt motor show, was the GLE 53 4Matic + Coupé. This AMG version has, just like the eponymous version of the regular GLE, a 435 hp and a 520 Nm strong 3.0-liter six-in-line turbo under its bonnet. It is a power source that thanks to mild-hybrid technology (EQ Boost) can temporarily develop an extra 22 hp and 250 Nm. The sports version gets in 5.3 counts to 100 km / h. The top speed is 250 km / h. The EQ Boost system can also drive the GLE at constant speed on the highway, which means that consumption is reduced thanks to this electrical support.
The provisional top version (until the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe comes along, that is) is equipped with AMG Active Ride Control, a properly tuned chassis under all circumstances. The system is based on AMG Ride Control +, the sporty air suspension of the range. Adapted steering and larger, more powerful all-round brakes should further emphasize the sporty character of this new AMG version. The GLE 53 4Matic + can be set in various driving modes via AMG Dynamic Select, such as Comfort, Sport and Sport +.
On the outside, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe variant of the GLE can of course be recognized by its Panamericana grille with fifteen vertical bars. Furthermore, things like the sportier-looking bumper work and the special 20- to 22-inch large alloy wheels distinguish this athlete from his milder brothers.
Inside, we find two 12.3-inch digital displays, screens on which the well-known and extensive MUBX system is run. Sport seats are standard in the GLE Coupé, the same applies to a sport steering wheel. Mercedes-Benz also reserves a number of material and color combinations for the finishing of, among other things, the seats and door panels for the GLE Coupé. At 655 liters, the luggage space of the GLE Coupé is smaller than that of the GLE (750 liters). If you the rear seat flat, you can carry 1,790 liters in the GLE Coupé. That is 70 liters more than with the outgoing model.
Just like the GLE, the GLE Coupé will be built in Tuscaloosa in the American state of Alabama.
