The next generation of the Mercedes GLE stretches his legs in prototype form and the Germans make no secret of it. FIRST-EVER spy video is here, courtesy of Autoweek.nl.

The current Mercedes-Benz GLE is actually a thoroughly upgraded M-Class. The new name was introduced on the SUV in 2015. The car will be replaced next year and it is the task of this – still camouflaged – completely new GLE to take the baton.

As far as we can see, the new car is slightly less hard-edged than the current GLE, following the more rounded lines of its newer counterparts. The aerodynamics should benefit from this move and – in combination with the standard rear-wheel drive – the consumption should be smaller too.

The all-new W167 Mercedes GLE will be build on the MRA platform of the current E-Class with the weight going down a few hundred kilograms. The brand new family of six-cylinder engines will also feature prominently on the new GLE.

The 9G-Tronic state-of-the-art 9-speed gearbox will be standard across the board. A hybrid powertrain is also confirmed for the all-new 2018 Mercedes GLE.

We expect to welcome the new GLE-Class sometimes in 2018.
