In the land of the super SUVs, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 has always played the part of the role model. Capable in the off-road as well as on the road, the G 63 is not to be mocked, regardless how old. The latest of them fights its predecessor on a drag strip. Will it show some respect?
On paper, the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 is faster than its father. But how much faster would he be? The two raced on a drag strip in Russia.
The latest model hits 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and goes all the way to 137 mph (220 km/h) or 149 mph (240 km/h) when equipped with the optional AMG Driver’s Package. The high-ride monster is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 585 PS and 62 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque. The power unit is coupled to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Its predecessor sports figures not to be ashamed with: 571 PS and 561 lb-ft (760 Nm) of torque, delivered by its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, coupled to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. It needs 5.3 seconds to run from a standstill to 60 mph and hits a top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).
