In a clever marketing move, Mercedes unveiled the first official photo of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 73e 4-door coupe (possible name) hybrid monster alongside the new Mercedes-AMG W12 E Performance Formula 1 car for 2021 season and Mercedes-AMG One hypercar.

To express the growing collaboration between the Mercedes-AMG sports division in Affalterbach and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team motorsport division in Brackley, England, Mercedes has unveiled a teaser featuring the new Mercedes-AMG GT73 e 4-door for the first time along with the new Formula 1 car for the 2021 season and the new Mercedes-AMG One hypercar.

Mercedes-AMG joined forces with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) in 2012.
Since then, the three partners have worked together on many technology transfer projects. The latest example is the electric turbocharger that is used in Formula 1 car and will debut on the new Mercedes-AMG One hypercar.

Other cooperation will take place in terms of cell technology of the high-performance batteries as well as their particular cooling requirements. These are two more examples of technological parallels between the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 and the road-going performance hybrids, which are in the starting blocks and will provide a tangible experience of the closer cooperation in everyday life as well.

Mercedes will soon start electrifying AMG models. The first two models will be the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 and Mercedes-AMG GT 73e 4-door coupe.

The top model Mercedes-AMG GT 73e 4-door coupe (code name X290) will debut in 2021.
Mercedes presented the concept of this model at the Geneva Motor Show in 2017. It had under the hood the 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine coupled to a hybrid system that provides 816 HP in total. The concept could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds.

It seems that the propulsion system will be taken over almost unchanged for the production model.
The 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 612 HP will be mated with a 200 HP electric motor, similar to the one that will be used in the new C 63 S, the total power will be over 800 HP. This value is clearly higher than the 639 HP currently offered by the most powerful AMG GT 63 S 4-door coupe.

It remains to be seen whether the hybrid model will accelerate faster than 3.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. It is stronger with 161 HP but also heavier due to the batteries that will offer a range of about 50 km.

German auto motor und sport magazine speculates that the new hybrid monster Mercedes-AMG GT 73 e 4-door coupe will have integral steering and a revised braking system and 9-speed automatic transmission.

All rumors announce that the name of the new model will be Mercedes-AMG 73 e 4-door coupe but it is not 100% sure. Since 2018, Mercedes has registered the names GLS 73, G 73 and S 73. Mercedes also had a model with the suffix 73 in the past. It is the SL 73 (R129) with 7.3-liter V12 engine and 525 HP. In 1999 it was the most powerful convertible on the market. It was built for two years after which the engine was used on the Pagani Zonda model.

But on the other hand the name could be Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance because Mercedes had already announced officially that
“‘E PERFORMANCE’ is the new technology label that will be used in product names and badges on all forthcoming Mercedes-AMG performance hybrid cars”.

The new hybrid monster is expected to be faster than the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid which has only 680 HP. The current Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-door coupe had already beaten Porsche Panamera Turbo at the Nurburgring in the fall of 2020.

In terms of design, the front will be more aggressive, the rear will have a new diffuser, the aileron will be fixed and carbon elements will appear on the body aprons and mirror housings. The interior will be decorated with sports seats, sports steering wheel, aluminum and carbon inserts.
