The future generation Mercedes GLS will be a completely new car, built on a new platform, with new engines and with a Maybach version.
Auto Motor und Sport magazine has all the details about the new Mercedes GLS. The 7 seven-seater luxury SUV will arrive in 2019 on a completely new platform named MHA (Modular High Architecture).
The current generation was launched in 2012 based on the W166 M-Class and was facelifted in 2015.
The new MHA platform will be used exclusively for the SUV and crossover Mercedes models and will bring more space, new assistance systems and the option for different types of propulsion.
The new GLS will be powered by the new engine generation which debut on the S-Class facelift. Despite the diesel debate, Mercedes will continue to offer the new high-tech diesel with 6 inline cylinders. All engines will be mated with the 9 speed automatic gearbox.

- GLS 400 d 4Matic with 340 HP (6 inline diesel)
- GLS 500 4Matic with 435 HP (the new 6 inline)
- GLS 560 4Matic with 469 HP (V8 bi-turbo)

- AMG GLS 63 4Matic with 612 HP (V8 bi-turbo)
The Plug-In Hybrid version will use the same high-tech propulsion system from the new S 560 e. The 367 HP and 500 Nm V6 3 liter bi-turbo engine is mated with an 90 KW and 440 Nm electric engine. The 13.5 kWh battery in S 560 e is big enough for a 50 km electric range.
The main news is the new Maybach version which fits perfectly on the new GLS.
The future GLS Maybach will compete against the future BMW X7 and the new Bentley Bentayga with V8 diesel and recently launched V8 petrol engine.
