Mercedes-Benz CLA’s newest rival, the all-new BMW 1 Series Sedan has been spotted testing again ahead of its Autumn launch. Front-wheel drive platform and three-cylinder engines are confirmed.
After breaking into unchartered territory with the first front-wheel driven, 3-cylinder powered, MPV-shaped model in its history, BMW continues to expand its entry-level line-up and prepares the launch of its first 4-door 1 Series.
Underpinning the new BMW 1 Series Sedan is the front-wheel-drive UKL1 platform, shared with the smaller Active Tourer, the current MINI Hatch and an entire line-up of upcoming FWD-models from both brands, including a small sedan. The interior and technologies present under the skin are also shared with the Active Tourer. The 1 Series Sedan will also come with optional xDrive four wheel drive.
There’s no definitive info regarding the powertrains on offer, but it’s easy to assume we can expect a choice of two petrols – a 1.5-litre/136 HP three-cylinder for the 118i and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder offering 184 hp for the 120i or 231 hp for the 125i; and three diesels – a 1.5-litre/116 HP three cylinder for the 116d, a 2.0-litre/150 HP four-cylinder for the 118d and a more powerful 2.0-litre/190 HP four-cylinder for the four-wheel drive-only 120d xDrive.
The American market on the other hand is set to get only two petrol versions of the new 1-Series Sedan, the 120i and 125i, bound to feature the same four cylinder turbo engine good for either 184 hp or 231 hp as its European counterpart.
