The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic debuted today at the 2020 Guangzhou Auto Show. This is the super luxury variant of the latest GLS, that allows you to further distance yourself from the proletariat.
The Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the second Maybach model from Mercedes-Benz since the Germans brought the luxury label back in 2015 by transforming it in a sub-brand or the equivalent of a posher trim level. Mercedes-Benz is now throwing its largest SUV in the Maybach spice mix.
In contrast to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the wheelbase of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the same as that of the car on which it is based: 3.14 meters. Yet you have more legroom in the back of this 5.2 meter long GLS than in the regular versions. This is because the third row of seats is not present. Instead, Mercedes-Benz gives the luxurious GLS two captain seats in the back, two huge armchairs. Those lucky enough to be able to take a seat there, enjoy from 1.10 to 1.34 meters of legroom. Great. Prefer a five-seater? The Mercedes-Maybach GLS can also be ordered with a bench. The electronically extendable and illuminated footboards are also unique for this Maybach-GLS.
Although the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is clearly recognizable as a GLS, there are also a number of special design elements. The new luxury SUV, for example, carries a Mercedes star on its nose and the front view is mainly determined by the really huge Maybach grille with chrome-plated vertical bars. The front bumper is specific to this Mercedes-Maybach version and is of course also peppered with chrome. We find more chrome around the side windows, too. The wheels, available in sizes of 22- and 23-inch, require little explanation. Just like the rest of the car, they are striking. Among other things, a Maybach logo is stuck to the D-pillar and whoever wants to can have his Maybach-GLS in two-tone exterior paint.
Under the hood of Mercedes’ most luxurious SUV ever we find a 4.0-liter V8 which delivers 588 hp and 730 Nm of torque and thanks to the now well-known EQ Boost system it offers 22 hp and 250 Nm extra. This power train is purely and exclusively reserved for the Mercedes-Maybach GLS in this power state. Daimler does not mention consumption and sprint figures for the time being, but this seems to us unnecessary in this segment.
Nappa leather, cushions, an open panoramic roof with blinds, heatable and ventilated massage seats that can be adjusted extensively are standard. Mercedes-Benz delivers standard air suspension, but you also have to pay extra for E-Active Body Control. Items such as folding tables, a refrigerator with space for three champagne bottles are also available as options. Nice detail: the well-known Air Balance package, with which the interior can be supplied with a fresh smelling perfume.
The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic will be available to order mid-next year. What amount is written on the price tag is not yet known. You can count on it that the amount can best be described as ‘considerable’.
