It weighs over 4 tons and it can withstand bullets and bombs. No, it’s not a tank. But it seems to be the next best thing to one. It is the armored Mercedes-AMG G63.

The latest generation of the iconic offroader has closed the gap between adventure and luxury. But who would have thought that would do the same between adventure and safety? No, it is not just about the NCAP stars kind of safety. We all know it got all five of them without moving a muscle. But it is the the bulletproof kind.

Armored Guard did the job. The experts enclosed the boxy vehicle in their X7 armor package. They completely reinforced the greenhouse, but from a distance, there is no way you could tell a normal window from a bulletproof one. The windows go up and down as easily as they have always been, yet, a bit slower. There is a new mechanism withstanding their weight.

All the body panels have also been reinforced, while the wheels and tires can withstand direct fire from small guns. The model got sirens and lights, which makes it look quite presidential.

The ballistic protection makes the Mercedes-AMG G63 heavier and slower

The Mercedes-AMG G63, even though very sporty, has never been a ballerina. With the extra window-glazing and reinforcing, its weight goes all the way 4,300 kilograms. It is thus over 1,7000 kilograms heavier than when it was when it rolled off the assembly line of the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria. The extra weight translates into lower performance in terms of speed, acceleration and handling.

The offroader comes standardly with 585 horsepower, 1,000 Nm of torque, making it run from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

But, regardless of the figures of its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, the Mercedes-AMG G63 with ballistic protection still comes packed with all the goodies that you would expect from the model.
