The Affalterbach-based AMG factory has just been designated the 2019 Factory of the Year by A.T. Kearney, the prestigious specialist journal Produktion and SV Veranstaltungen. The most powerful 4-cylinder engine is being built there.

The new M139 2.0-liter engine develops 421 horsepower under the bonnet of the A-Class, CLA and CLA Shooting Brake. It is built along a newly redesigned assembly line, following the tried and tested “One Man, One Engine” hand-finishing principle and applying the Industry 4.0 manufacturing principles throughout the process. This involves a completely new, digitally supported process and logistical organization. Digital tools provide the employees with optimum support throughout their work.

“AMG has combined in exemplary manner the assembly concept which is focused on human input with a high level of automation in the area of testing stations and the supply of materials, and applies a broad spectrum of digital technologies”, juries explained.

On the other hand, Mercedes-AMG shows delight in receiving the international award. “The standard we have set ourselves is to redefine the future of performance over and again – with our products and also in our production in Affalterbach. I am proud of what our team has achieved here”, Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG states.

The prestigious “Factory of the Year” competition has been running annually since 1992. Manufacturing companies from any sector can participate with a factory or a business unit, as long as it complies with the requirement regarding the minimum number of workforce: 100. The factory is evaluated by a jury of renowned experts from the fields of industry and science. Other winners of the additional awards will be announced in the upcoming days.
