In 2020, the Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are set for their mid-life refresh and the Germans have released the first official teaser images today, with the (online) premiere expected on May 27.

Next week, Mercedes-Benz will launch the Meet Mercedes DIGITAL series, similar to a news broadcast – presenting a current topic at regular intervals, shedding light on background information and letting experts have their say. The moderated programmes offer talks in the studio and reports from production plants or test tracks. In addition, in-depth information on each topic will be made available for download in the form of videos, graphics, press releases and images. The various episodes of Meet Mercedes DIGITAL and all accompanying content will be published in a media special at media.mercedes-benz.com/meetmercedesdigital and the second episode of “Meet Mercedes DIGITAL: Welcome to the E-Class Family”, will offer the chance to experience digitally the new E-Class Coupé and the new E-Class Cabriolet.

According to the dedicated website, the updated E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet “combine high everyday practicality, exemplary safety and top travel comfort with sporty, elegant design. The front end in particular is much more dynamic, with flatter headlights featuring full-LED technology and a diamond grille as standard.” A lower placed grille in the vein of the Panamericana theme (used on the latest A-Class, CLS and AMG models), paired with flatter headlights should give the cars a sportier appearance.

At the rear, the changes are expected to be very small and the news is undoubtedly limited to a different layout of the rear light units made up from two parts – just like the A-Class in both its five-and four-door guises.

The makeover also targets the interior, as the E-Class Coupe/Cabriolet is set to get the new MBUX infotainment system based on artificial intelligence. The system is directly linked to two 10.25-inch displays (standard, optional 12.3-inch), one located directly behind the wheel and is able to indicate traffic lights, reads traffic signs and can also detect house numbers.

Mercedes-Benz says that the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet facelift will be more powerful and efficient than ever before thanks to the new, electrified engines with EQ Boost. The new edition of the E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé from Affalterbach is powered by a 3.0-litre engine which delivers 320 kW (435 hp) thanks to double charging via exhaust gas turbocharger and electric auxiliary compressor. The maximum torque is 520 Newton metres. Its EQ Boost starter generator provides an additional 16 kW of power for a short time as well as 250 Newton metres of torque and feeds the 48-volt vehicle electrical system.

The current E-Class Coupe of the 238 model series celebrated its world premiere in December 2016 and was exhibited for the first time at an international trade fair in January 2017 at the NAIAS in Detroit. The cabriolet followed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, which initiated the next chapter at Mercedes-Benz in a success story of sporting elegance. The rejuvenated 2020 Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet should reach the showrooms this autumn.
