Mercedes-Benz was about to be the inventor of free-camouflage testing of a car to be launched. The executives did not allow it though, even if they were inches away from saying yes. Head of Daimler, Dieter Zetsche, tells the unbelievable story.

Like for every model, Mercedes worked for approximately two years to develop the new generation of the unbeatable Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Dieter Zetsche tells that the engineers were so close to getting the off-roader unmasked out in the street.

“When the G-Class team in Graz in Austria where the G is manufactured, wanted to test drive the new G in public, they actually considered going without the usual test car camouflage. They figured only experts would recognize this as the secret new “G.” It could literally hide in plain sight. Because there are simply some things you cannot camouflage…”.

And indeed, you can’t hide the boxy shape of the G, not even beneath the thickest layer of camouflage.

“The boxy G-Wagon is like a Coke bottle or an Eames chair: instantly recognized”, says Doctor Z.

The testimony is part of an editorial written by the Daimler executive on his Linkedin profile on what turns a car into an icon, claiming that the 4-decade G-Class, among few other models, like the Jeep Wrangler, the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes 300 SL, is indeed, a legendary car.
