Qualcomm joins Mercedes as Official Technology Partner

Qualcomm officially announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, signed a multi-year agreement with Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team, thus becoming the official technology partner.

The two companies will develop together new car technologies in order to enhance the on-track performance and the foundation for development will be provided by Qualcomm expertise in mobile. The partnership objectives will be improving the overall race, vehicle reliability, operational and power efficiency. What’s more, Qualcomm’s branding will be featured on Mercedes F1 W06 Hybrid car, the racesuit sleeves of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and also on Mercedes AMG Petronas team clothing.

Derek Aberle, president of Qualcomm Incorporated agreed that Qualcomm is committed to lead the connected car movement and to bring the benefits of mobile technology to the automotive industry. “With Mercedes-Benz leading the motorsports circuit, this collaboration provides a prominent testing ground for new technology advancements. On the other hand, Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport added that it was important to select a technology sponsor that can raise the game in what concerns innovation and racing. “With each year, developing a winning Formula One team relies more and more on electronics and connectivity, and we’re very excited to have Qualcomm onboard to work with us. Their unparalleled leadership in the mobile and automotive industries makes them a perfect addition to the team to help uncover the new connectivity potential of our car and to explore potential further applications of this technology in the future.”

Qualcomm is involved in more than 40 initiatives with car manufacturers and suppliers in order to develop new technologies to improve connectivity, safety, navigation, infotainment and also Qualcomm Halo™ technology for wireless electric vehicle charging.
