The production of the Mercedes-Benz GLA has started at the Sindelfingen plant, some 20 kilometers away from Stuttgart, marking the point for the “Innovation Factory” pilot project.

“With the GLA, the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant is producing a compact model for the first time proving its high flexibility. With the project ‘Innovation Factory’ we are shaping the future of production at Mercedes-Benz Cars. At the same time we are supporting our global production network by providing quickly additional capacities”, explains Michael Bauer, Site Manager of the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant.

The ”Innovation Factory” integrates cutting edge production technologies featuring the “Factory 56” system, one of the most modern car productions. It benefits from the flexibility of working models, covering most of the aspects of future-oriented production procedures.

The GLA compact SUV has been the offspring of the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant since 2013. The model has also been produced at the Beijing Benz Automotive Corporation (BBAC) since 2013. Since the moment it hit the showrooms, the GLA has been the favorite of more than half a million customers. The A- and the B-Class are also being manufactured in Rastatt, making the factory run at its full capacity. The production of the model in Sindelfingen is set to bring additional capacity, producing, for the first time, a vehicle with a front-wheel drive. It is a special moment, since the site is known as a center of competence for the rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The GLA is the first compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz. In 2017, it comfortably positioned itself as a market leader in markets such as China, USA, Germany and Great Britain.
