AMG is THE dream factory for any true Mercedes-Benz aficionado. But would a real fan also question the superiority of the GT supercar? AutoExpress does so, pitting AMG’s top-model against three of its siblings, each with its own strong personality.
First contender is the Mercedes-AMG GT’s closest relative, the Mercedes-AMG C 63. Why close? Because the two models basically share the same divine 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, good for a thundering 510 HP rating. AutoExpress did go that little bit further and chose the T-Modell, spicing things even more with the amazing practicality offered by what is arguably one of the fastest and sportiest estates on the market.
Second goes the CLS 63 Shooting Brake, the pinnacle of Mercedes-AMG’s more… family-oriented arm. In fact, the CLS can’t carry more luggage than its smaller brother, failing to do so with incredible panache. The E-Class’ inherited chassis is not so new anymore and it shows, the sporty nature inherent to any AMG Mercedes falling behind that of the C 63, despite the CLS’ 175 HP advantage provided by its bigger 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8. But… and this is a big but, nothing can touch the CLS in therms of presence, presence, presence, it’s all about style!
Of course, any good AMG shoot-out can’t be over before the big daddy of all Affalterbach-bread rockets will show its face. Yes, we’re talking about the huge (on style and sheer size) Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe, the V12 monster churning out an incredible 612 HP. All this power can’t hide the fact that the S 63 Coupe prefers to be driven on Sunset boulevard, showing-off its gorgeous styling and simply stand-out, leaving the raw sportiness business to its pure-bread supercar sibling, the Mercedes-AMG GT.
And this brings us to the end of the comparison test, topped by none-other than AMG’s pride and joy GT, the best creation of Mercedes’ sporty-arm since the SLS and the uber-exclusive CLK DTM AMG. Finished in poster worthy bright yellow, the GT simply blows its relatives out of the way, seducing AutoExpress’ editor Rebecca Chaplin and earning the coveted five-star rating.
But we won’t spoil the review for you. Enjoy the 4-minute long Mercedes-AMG dream battle below.
