Mercedes-AMG GT has scored another big gig. Daimler’s supercar has won this year’s coveted Best Driver’s Car accolade by respected American magazine Motor Trend.
Its resume certainly recommends it for the title of Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car. With a maximum output of 375 kW (510 hp) and peak torque of 650 Newton metres, the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine guarantees high-end performance: the GT S accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and attains a maximum speed of 310 km/h.
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is standard while the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, optionally available to any GT S customer, brings a further increase in driving dynamics. It comprises dynamic engine and transmission mounts and a specific engine application in “RACE” DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode and in manual transmission mode “M”. The package also includes tauter spring and damper tuning, more negative camber at the front axle as well as an adapted speed-sensitive sports steering system.
Mercedes’ contenders had no chance in front of AMG’s latest effort. The list of rivals for the title included the 2015 Bentley Continental GT3-R, the 2016 Cadillac ATS-V, the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (Z07), the 2015 Lexus RC F, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S, the 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 and the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R.
All models were thoroughly tested on the famed Laguna Seca raceway by a massive team comprising of 25 people. And we’re not talking only about Motor Trend’s editors, but also about the magazine’s entire staff of photographers and video specialists. This year, the special guest star has been the racing star legend Randy Pobst.
The ten cars were driven on the road and on the famous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track in order to decide which offered the most thrilling experience. Apart from the road testing and the track hot laps, some very modern equipment was employed to draw all kind of techincal data from the tested cars.
The conclusion has been unequivocal. “The Mercedes-AMG GT S has the sharpest, most precise steering we have ever felt on any Mercedes or AMG vehicle. It makes massive power from a compact, high-tech turbocharged V-8 engine. What most impressed my team is how well the GT S was able to combine these elements. It put all 503 of its horsepower to the ground like an all-wheel-drive supercar and gripped the road through high-speed corners like a winged racer,” editor-in-chief Ed Loh explained.
