The all-new 2018 Mercedes A-Class is out testing again, ahead of its official premiere set to take place in two years’ time. Why the rush, then? Mercedes wants to make sure everything is right before signing-off the new baby Benz. New spy pics via Auto-motor-und-sport.de.
The current Mercedes A-Class (internally known as the W176) has been on the market since 2012 and it has put to good use the modular MFA platform (Modular Front-wheel drive architecture), spawning a full family of derivatives, including the GLA, CLA and CLA Shooting Break.
With the new generation of the A-class, the number of variants will rise again. Among the novelties we will find a notchback version dedicated to the Chinese market and a Mercedes GLB, which should be seen as a small SUV 7-seat alternative to the current B-Class.
As a platform, the new A-Class will use the new MFA2 architecture. It aims to help the compact Mercedes lose weight again (by as much as 50 kilograms) and to benefit from an increased torsional rigidity. The wheelbase of the new Mercedes A-class is also expected to grow by 2 centimeters, which should generate more space for the rear passengers.
The smaller diesel engines will continue to be supplied by Renault. Meanwhile, the all-new two-liter diesel engines will take a significant leap in terms of performance and efficiency, following the move to the new OM 654 family of engines, as used in the new E-Class – the power spectrum will range from 150 to 194 hp.
The gasoline engines will also be brand new. The new series M254 engines (successor to the M274) will already be introduced until 2017 on other Mercedes models. They will feature a 2 liter capacity, direct injection and turbocharging. In addition to the AMG 45 version (400 PS), Mercedes could also slot a new AMG version in the line-up. Power output: 280 hp round. When it comes to hybrid technology, the A-Class will also join the race for zero emissions. The pure electric range should be around 100 km.
Otherwise, the new generation Mercedes A-Class should basically address the shortcomings of its predecessor. More space, a larger trunk and more comfort creatures. The driver receives a higher quality cockpit, a head-up display and a touch screen.
The interior will be all-new, of course, but the big question is if the virtual cockpit with two large 12,3-inch TFT displays will also be a featured in the 2018 Mercedes A-Class. It seems more likely that the new A-Class comes with a single virtual cockpit à la VW Golf or Audi A3. Whether the basic version will still sport analog instruments, is still unclear.
