Mercedes-Benz excludes the possibility of a ten-speed gearbox, Autocar has revealed. The current 9G-Tronic will remain at the top of the food chain for the time being.
The nine-speed transmission is in fact a fresh addition to Mercedes’ range, featured only on the new GLC, GLE and the S-Class. The all-new E-Class will also join this list early next year, as the upcoming sedan will get the 9G-Tronic across the range. The recently updated GLS is offered already with the 9G-Tronic.
Autocar is quoting an inside source within Mercedes. According to this anonymous engineer, Mercedes considers the step up to ten-speed gearboxes as an unnecessary one since the 9G-Tronic offers the right blend of responsiveness and refinement.
Ford and its fellow American giant General Motors are the only companies committed to launching such transmissions. Volkswagen has cancelled the development program for a 10-speed DSG in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal.
