Sportier and lighter, the next generation of the Mercedes GLE continues testing in prototype form, ahead of its 2018 debut. FIRST-EVER image of the interior is here via carscoops.com.

The current Mercedes-Benz GLE is actually a thoroughly upgraded M-Class. The new name was introduced on the SUV in 2015. The all-new W167 Mercedes GLE will be build on the MRA platform of the current E-Class with the weight going down a few hundred kilograms. The brand new family of six-cylinder engines will also feature prominently on the new GLE. The 9G-Tronic state-of-the-art 9-speed gearbox will be standard across the board. A hybrid powertrain is also confirmed for the all-new 2018 Mercedes GLE.

Visually, the new generation Mercedes GLE turns out not as a revolution, but an evolution. As far as we can see, the new car is slightly less angular than the current GLE, following the more rounded lines of its newer counterparts. The aerodynamics should benefit from this move and – in combination with the standard rear-wheel drive – the consumption should be smaller too. The characteristic C-pillar should continue to strive against the direction of travel.

The interior, on the other hand is all-new but familiar, taking ergonomics and styling cues from its sedan counterpart, the all-new E-Class, launched last year. The first spy pictures reveal a dual 12,3-inch screen layout and different rotary knob for the navi.

Otherwise, the new Mercedes GLE should also show a better set of off-road qualities compared to its predecessor. In addition to more ground clearance and better rear underrun protection, the 2019 Mercedes GLE will also benefit from new and improved front and rear axle articulation, air suspension, limited slip differentials and gearboxes with reduction functions.
